Every company has a story. The story of My Home Treats is led by a woman who transformed her challenges into strength—and her passion for science into a meaningful business.
Here is a Q&A interview to discover the journey of Viviane Belair, her vision, and what drives her every day.
I have been passionate about algae since my undergraduate studies in marine biology. I originally had the idea of commercializing algae-based products, but at the time I lacked business knowledge, proper equipment, and a concrete product to bring to market.
I set that project aside to pursue a master’s degree and eventually a PhD in agri-food sciences. Later, I developed a product that was easier to commercialize, and dog treats allowed me to combine all of my expertise into something unique and tangible.
We created dog treats to help build meaningful moments between people and their dogs. Our treats are 100% natural and hypoallergenic.
I surrounded myself with local producers to build a company that is consistent, transparent, and rooted in its community.
I have always been hardworking, but I often had to work harder than others because I struggled in school. I nearly failed my first year… and eventually earned a PhD from McGill University.
I was also involved in a serious “crazy carpet” accident that left me in a deep coma. Neurologists later told me I had “won the lottery” in terms of surviving without major complications.
After that experience, I was able to return to university and complete my studies. Today, one of my ongoing challenges is maintaining a balanced routine that includes exercise and at least seven hours of sleep per night.
The biggest source of pressure I’ve identified is uncertainty. To manage it, I move forward at my own pace so I can handle that uncertainty without burning out.
I surround myself with trusted and experienced people who help me stay grounded and reduce that sense of instability.
What helped me most was keeping startup costs as low as possible. For six years, I collected used or donated equipment.
I also sought out every available resource to adapt my product to the market—both in terms of pricing and quality.
Perseverance. I try to appreciate every small success while continuing to dream a little bigger.
If I participated in the Special Women’s Edition, it was to celebrate how far I’ve come and to encourage myself to keep going. And if it inspires even one person, you never know the positive impact that can have.
Viviane Belair’s journey is a powerful reminder that meaningful businesses are built step by step. Through science, resilience, and entrepreneurial vision, My Home Treats was created with intention—and with heart.
